Here is a short review about a story “Splashed down”.
At one level, it is a story about love. Augustine Joseph and Lilly Antony, two souls deeply in love and engaged find themselves sucked into conventions and obedience.
Lilly, a young, dreamy girl, hailing from a “Good family”, tries to be the graceful woman she is expected to be. Augustine, being “Every inch of a country gentleman” that he could be seems torn between love and responsibilities, arguably in disguise of ambition. While Augustine wants to “Turn the tide” by building a multi-specialty hospital in the memory of a lost friend, Lilly yearns for them to be married. However, Augustine’s dream only takes Lilly further away from her own dream, for she is expected to study Hospital Management in Bengaluru for two years.
The author tries to draw pictures of the 19th century psychological setup through the physical conduct of the characters. However, one will need a bit of a sweet tooth for some of the flavor of affection and desire in this story.
