About
About WordBred
An independent journal of culture and criticism, and the studio that grew out of it.
WordBred publishes close readings of culture, media and everyday life — film, music, literature, language, work and the arguments running underneath them.
It began in 2016 as a school project: four friends in a library, trying to build something that showed what words could do. It has since published 57 pieces by 15 writers, and the questions have not changed much. What is this film actually arguing? Why did that phrase catch on? What does this say about how we live now?
Better questions.Richer stories.
01What we publish
Reviews, essays, interpretations, opinion and poetry. Pieces are commissioned and edited rather than aggregated, and we would rather run one considered argument than five quick takes. Writers keep their byline and their voice.
02The Studio
The same work, done for organisations. WordBred Studio takes on customer stories for founders and sales teams, cultural research and decision briefs for brand and creative teams, and story development for producers and writers.
Studio work funds the journal. Neither pays for coverage in the other — commissioned work never appears as editorial, and editorial is never sold.
03Write for us
We read every pitch. Send the argument, not the finished piece: what you want to claim, why it matters now, and roughly how long it will run.
